METHODOLOGY OF ART THERAPY TRAINING

REAL CASES

During the training, the student will be presented with real world situations in which they have to respond using art therapy methods. Later on, they will compliment these real cases with the theories that support art therapy, thus making their learning more significant.

STRUCTURE

The entire Metàfora Art Therapy training curriculum has been designed in such a way that each course is part of a module of the next level. In this way, training -whatever the level- is sequential and is experienced as a continuity. It is divided into 3 levels: introductory course, postgraduate and Master in Art Therapy.

HOW WE TEACH

The art therapy program offered at Metàfora follows the recommendations of the Professional Association of Art Therapists in Spain (ATe). Each training level is characterized by a combination of work experience and theory. It starts with the experience and ends with the theory.

TRAINING COURSES IN ART THERAPY

The entire Metàfora art therapy training has been designed in such a way that each course is part of a module of the next level.

In this way, training, at whatever level, is experienced as a continuity of the same unit.

This structure allows in turn that the student can accommodate the training at their convenience, interrupting and resuming training by levels (Introductory Course, Postgraduate and Master) according to their personal situation.

Each training course is divided into the same areas of study:

Theory and practice of the visual arts
Theory of art therapy Teoría de la arteterapia
Experiential work
Dynamic psychology
Academic work

STRUCTURE OF THE ART THERAPY TRAINING

FIRST LEVEL: INTRODUCTORY AND INTENSIVE COURSE IN ART THERAPY

In these courses, students gain basic knowledge of art therapy and learn through experience. There are various course options: Winter Intensive & Summer Intensive, both in English. We complement the programs with the courses in Spanish, such as Intensivo de Otoño, Intensivo de Invierno, Intensivo de Primavera and Escuela de Verano.

Each is equivalent to a ‘Foundation Course’, an initial training common to traditional western academia.

SECOND LEVEL: POSTGRADUATE IN ART THERAPY

This course lays out the foundations of art therapy. Depending on the interests of the student, the postgraduate course can be taken independently, or the Master’s degree can be continued in order to have the complete training as art therapist, since for practical purposes it is the first year of the master’s degree.

THIRD LEVEL: MASTER IN ART THERAPY – TRAINING AS ART THERAPISTS

The Master in Relational Art Therapy aims to prepare art therapists for the duties of the profession. The Master takes place over two academic years part-time. Like the postgraduate course, the master’s degree can be taken in a blended format or online.

FROM PRACTICE

The experiential section is included in all courses. Each of the modalities starts from the experience and concludes with the theory. There are various types of experiential work:

Art therapy groups
Observation and expression techniques
Monographic art workshops
Individual and group tutorials

Didactic Therapy

THEORY OF ART THERAPY

The theoretical section includes the following art therapy theory classes:

Presentation of clinical cases
Specific art therapy applications depending on the group of users
Project elaboration
Methodology and investigation
Conferences discussing evolutionary psychology, psychopathology, dynamic psychotherapy, psychoanalysis, group theory
Specified seminars

DIFFERENT SCHOOLS

The theoretical orientation of the training in art therapy offered by Metàfora integrates different complementary currents, mainly: Attachment Theory, Relational Psychoanalysis, Theory of Psychotherapy through Art, Mentalization and Analytical Group Theory.
